Ice Cream
by Arrathir

It was a hot summer day, the kind where one has no better desire than to remain indoors with the air conditioning on full blast. Keen, however, did not have the luxury of AC. The young man was lying on the couch, too hot to think about doing anything but lie there and stare at the ceiling.

"Master, Miyo is so hot."

Keen looked up to see the fox spirit standing in the doorframe. She was, fortunately, fully clothed. Ever since the beginning of the heat wave, Keen had told Miyo many times that, no matter how hot she was, walking around naked was not appropriate. It had taken a few reminders, but the Kitsune seemed to have finally caught the message.

"Miyo, I’ve told you not to call me that," he said, almost automatically.

"I'm sorry," said Miyo "But can't you do anything about the heat? Miyo needs to cool down."

"Well, why don't we go for some ice cream?"

"I scream?" said Miyo, with the familiar perplexed expressions she wore when confronted to an unknown concept "Does it hurt?"

"No," said Keen "It's a treat. You'll see, it's very good."

"You mean you eat it?" said Miyo, her gray and white ears perking up "Good! Miyo is also hungry!"

Keen and the Kitsune left into the sweltering heat of mid-afternoon. The air was extremely humid and the sun beat down mercilessly on the two of them. You could see the heat waves in the air, like a hazy blur on the horizon. Keen could literally feel the sweat beading on his forehead. Fortunately, the nearest ice cream parlor was only a few blocks away so they were soon able to leave the blistering outdoors for the cool inside of the shop.

As usual, Miyo was interested by everything she saw. She was firing off a dozen questions a minute, asking Keen what everything was. Keen finally had to literally drag her to the counter where a tried-looking teen boy was waiting to take their order.

"Now, what flavor do you want?" Keen asked the Kitsune.

"Flavor?"

"Never mind," sighed Keen, rolling his eyes "Two chocolate cones please," he said. The shopkeeper immediately set to work, digging the ice cream from a deep barrel in the freezer behind the counter. Keen paid up and handed a cone to Miyo She sniffed it curiously and then, apparently satisfied, took a big bite out of it.

"It's cold!" she said, through her mouthful of ice cream "But it's good!"

"Miyo, you don't gobble it down," Keen patiently explained, "You lick it."

Miyo nodded, showing she understood. She set about consuming her cone, her tongue flicking in and out as she licked away. Keen directed her to a booth and sat down beside her. He smiled inwardly as he watched Miyo enjoying her frozen treat. It probably was a great shock for her to be eating something that was meant to be eaten cold. In no time, she had finished off her cone and was licking the melted ice cream for her fingers when she suddenly cried out in pain.

"Ah! My forehead! It hurts!"

"It's OK," said Keen "It's just because you ate your ice cream too fast. Here, lean on my shoulder and put your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Don't worry, it won't last long."

Miyo rested her head on Keen's shoulder and closed her eyes, still whimpering in pain from the brain freeze. Keen blushed as he felt the fox girl's body against his. Still, it was pleasurable. Miyo was very cute and Keen was attracted to her. He tried not to show it too much, mainly because he was still unsure if he really loved her or if it was just infatuation. Miyo, on the other hand, had no trouble showing her affection towards Keen, most of which was probably due to his saving her. Keen didn't know if Miyo’s affection was genuine or if she was just grateful for what he'd done.

"Miyo is feeling better now, Ma-Keen," she said, sitting up straight "Oh, your ice cream is all melted."

Keen had been wondering why his hand was feeling cold and wet all of the sudden. The once-appetizing ball of chocolate ice cream had now become a soggy mess. Cursing himself for being so distracted, Keen grabbed a wad of paper towels from the dispenser on the table and mopped up the mess before finishing up what was left of his ice cream.

"Well?" said Keen as they reluctantly left the store "Did you like it?"

"It was very good," said Miyo "Thank-you." She leaned over and gave Keen a peck on the cheek. "Can we come back some time?"

"Sure. Whenever you want," said Keen.

"Yay! Thank-you, Keen! You make Miyo so happy!" The fox girl enthusiastically glomped Keen, who sweatdropped but smiled. Maybe the heat wave wasn't so bad after all.
